Though Punta Cana is advertised as one destination, it is helpful to understand the different and diverse areas it encompasses. Each has a unique feel and has different offerings to give you the experience you desire. Many people choose to stay in one of the many luxurious, world class resorts but for those who wish to experience the true Dominican life it is best to rent an apartment, condo or a lovely villa, of which there are many to choose from. Something to know if you are planning to vacation at a resort: all resorts are advertised as being in Punta Cana. They will advise you not to leave the resort unless on a tour that they provide. In some areas they are correct in that there is nothing outside the particular resort to walk to. If you want to be able to leave the resort on your own to shop or just walk around without renting a car, it is best to stay in the Bavaro area. There are shopping malls, town plazas with various shops and bodegas, restaurants on the beach, beach and water sports, movie theaters, hospitals, cool bars and fun nightlife. Public transportation is available as well as taxies and car rentals for you to explore at your leisure.

Activities

Located on the beach are The Kite Club Punta Cana and Blue Vision Adventures, (diving). Other activities ate volleyball, swimming and snorkeling. Popular watersports activities include catamaran trips, two-story party boats, high-speed boats, parasailing, deep-sea fishing, diving, snorkeling, surfing, flyboat, windsurfing, paddle boats, party cruises, spa cruises and pirate cruises.

Climate

Punta Cana is a Caribbean topical paradise that is the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic, known for it’s beautiful beaches. The weather is warm all year with temperate highs around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Punta Cana also receives its share of rainfall every year (an average of 40 inches) due to the occasional tropical storm.

December through February you’ll find that Punta Cana is the most crowded. Many visit from northern areas to enjoy the warm tropical weather. The year end holidays also bring a lot of crowds, not to mention many visiting Punta Cana in February for the Carnival celebrations.

If visiting Punta Cana at this time, it’s recommended to make reservations well in advance.

In spring there is a drop in the crowds and you’ll find it is a good time to get better rates on lodging. Of course the weather is still beautiful, as it is nearly all year round. There will be rise in visitors during spring break.

Punta Cana’s off season starts around June. This is also when the rainy season starts. The official hurricane season is from June to November and you’ll find many activities may be impeded by the rain. At this point in time, you can find your best deals on accommodations and vacation packages.

Getting Around

Public transportation is available as well as taxies and car rentals for you to explore at your leisure.

Language

The official language is Spanish, but most tourist destination staff also speak English, French, Italian and German.

Money

The currency is the Dominican Peso. Major credit cards and traveler’s checks are accepted at many of the tourist locations

The local currency is the Dominican peso (RD$). The daily rate fluctuates depending on the day and the location of exchange.

Keep these numbers in mind as a general guideline:

RD$100 = US$2

RD$500 = US$10

RD$1, 000 = US$20

United States dollars and Euros can be readily exchanged in banks, or in authorized exchange offices around the country. Some exchange offices also accept the following currencies: Canadian dollar, Swiss franc, Danish krone, British pound, Japanese yen, Scottish pound, Swedish krona, and Norwegian krone.

ATMs are widely available from a variety of established banks, including Scotiabank and Banco Popular. They are safe to use for withdrawals in the local currency. They also provide the best exchange rates. Choose an indoor location and stick to daytime use. The Spanish word for ATM is cajero. For help in determining the amount you want to withdraw, download and use a free handy app like XE.

ATMs from Banco Popular, Banco BHD León, Banco Progreso, and Scotiabank accept North American bank cards, and offer an English or Spanish language menu. As a tip, you will often find ATM machines in airports, supermarkets, major resorts, and shopping malls.

Negatives

It is highly recommended you do not drink the tap water unless boiled first. Purified water can be purchased.

Night Life

Effervescent nightlife and world-class gambling can be found at most resorts throughout the region, and are a great way to unwind after a day filled with adventure. You can experience the nightlife of Punta Cana like a local at one of many discos and nightspots, such as Oro, and Kviar. Enjoy an evening visiting the internationally famous Coco Bongo. Also at the Puntacana Village, and in Sanctuary Town in Cap Cana, you can find a large variety of bars and restaurants, which can be lively or laid back to suit your style. Partygoers can also enjoy a mystical night of dancing and animation in an unparalleled location at Imagine Nightclub, a club dispersed throughout a network of caves spanning 115, 500 feet (35, 000 meters).

Restaurants

Punta Cana offers a wide selection of restaurants ranging from family-friendly to romantic, many of them by the beach. Popular options include Poseidón, La Yola, Little John, Playa Blanca, Capitán Cook, Jellyfish, Huracán Café, and Noah among others, as well as a variety of places to enjoy at the Puntacana Village, Sanctuary Town and Blue Mall with the new and popular Bachata Rosa restaurant. This interesting restaurant and pop music bar present a diverse menu with Dominican and international fusions and with a decoration that reflects the themes of the songs of one of its owners, the famous Dominican singer and Grammy Award winner, Juan Luis Guerra.

Shopping

Punta Cana Village is filled with shops, restaurants, supermarkets, banks and pharmacies and medical clinics. Visitors can embrace the lifestyle of the rich and famous in Punta Cana or seek out Dominican Republic souvenirs at local shops. Upscale boutiques can be found at places like Puntacana Village, Blue Mall, Palma Real Shopping Village and San Juan Shopping Center, while local vendors and shops can be found scattered along beaches, such as Plaza Bibijagua at Bávaro Beach. Traditional Dominican products like amber, larimar, ceramic dolls, handmade wooden fish with recycled parts, chocolate, coffee, rum, cigars, macadamia nuts, merengue music and more can be bought from these local stands.

The main draw to the luxurious and exotic area of Punta Cana are the pristine beaches that stretch more than 40 miles (64 kilometers) and border the meeting point between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
